Toronto's Chinatown has hired security patrols in an effort to combat petty crime.
The Chinatown Business Improvement Association ( BIA) has hired the guards to patrol the neighborhood and keep a watch out for the small crimes that Toronto police are often too busy to deal with - things such as trespassing, shoplifting, pickpocketting and loitering.
Stephen Chan, chair of the BIA, said the guard are part of a pilot project and will patrol the neighbourhood four days a week (Thursday thru Sunday ) for a three period. Two guards will be on duty from 1 pm to 9 pm. Merchants experiencing problems, have a hot-line number they can call.
